Froogle Store
Froogle (developed by Google) was discontinued as a separate brand and is now listed under the Shopping link of Google’s search results. It helps shoppers to find products for sale on the web. It was previously organised as a directory, with 15 different product categories, including Clothing & Accessories, Arts & Entertainment, Car & Vehicles, Baby, Books, Music & Video, Computers, Electronics, Flowers, Food & Gourmet, Health & Personal Care, Home & Garden, Office, Sports & Outdoors and Toys & Games. The classification is still part of the way products are submitted but is now only available as a refinement to search queries. You can look for products by using a keyword search and then limit your search to a specific category.
Search results are limited to one product per store. Each match in the list of results displays a small image with the name, price and description and a direct link to the product page on the merchant’s own web site. Google Adwords are shown on the right hand side of the results page.
Google will list your products provided your web site is already up and running and products are available at a fixed price for purchase using a credit or debit card and the ordering process is clearly defined (PayPal meets this requirement). They have other restrictions and technical requirements such as submitting product data at least once a month, even if it hasn’t changed.
In its marketing literature Google said that “unlike other online shopping sites, it costs nothing. There is no spending account to set up and maintain. No cost-per-click. No cost, period.” They went on to say that “you control your product info”. Well, therein lies the catch because in our opinion submitting a data feed (which is done through Google Base) is beyond most people’s understanding. However if you have a few products listed for sale on your web site with PayPal Buy Now buttons then it can generate a few extra sales leads and increase your brand awareness.
